Newson offered trial with Gills

Gillingham have offered a trial to Needham Market striker Sam Newson who has scored 32 times already this season.

The 23 year old Ipswich born striker will join up with the Gillingham squad on Sunday for four days, giving boss Andy Hessenthaler the chance to run the rule over the prolific front man.

Newson’s form has attracted interest from various clubs with Gillingham being the first to take the striker on trial after impressing in the Ryman League Division One North this season.

Andy Gould, Needham Market’s director of football, today told the Green’Un: “Gillingham’s player-coach Nicky Southall made contact with us and said they would like to speak to Sam.

“They would like Sam to join them for a period where they can have a closer look at him to see if he can make the step up to that level.

“We feel we are doing the right thing for the player, although our objectives as a football club remain unchanged.

“It is a great opportunity for the player, and it would be wrong of Needham Market as a football club to stand in his way.

“If Gillingham are keen to take him we will then open discussions because he is contractually tied to us.”

Newson scored 25 goals last season for Needham Market after joining from Stanway Rovers in June 2010 having scored 34 goals in the Ridgeons League Premier Division.
